GLOBALSTAGE ANNOUNCES THE COMPLETION OF THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU
July 2, 1999, San Francisco Editing was completed today on the sixth video in the continuing series of Globalstage Family Theatre Adventures, The Island of Dr. Moreau. The video was filmed on location in Seattle, Washington at the Taproot Theatre. The play is a clever adaptation of the H.G. Wells story exploring the promises and limits of scientific experimentation.
Moreau is a disgraced doctor who flees London for a deserted island in the Pacific Ocean. He wants to conduct his unorthodox animal experiments away from the disapproving eyes of civilized society. But when a shipwreck brings an unwelcome visitor from civilization, Edward Prendick, a principled and cultured biologist from London, the egotistical doctor's world rapidly self-destructs.
Why does the servant have furry, pointed ears? What are those screams coming from the laboratory? Will anyone get off the island alive?
The Island of Dr. Moreau is an exciting dramatic examination of the fine line that separates us as humans, from the beasts. And, as the viewer discovers, it's frighteningly easy to slip over that line.
The play premiered and was discovered by Globalstage at the 1999 Seattle Fringe Festival. The intricate script was written by the talented playwright Sean Gaffney who is faithful to Wells' book, until the surprising, and very clever ending. The nine member cast was directed by Scott Nolte.
