Playing from the Heart wins Best Video Award 1999 from Oppenheim Toy Portfolio
Playing from the Heart is part of the acclaimed series, Globalstage Family Theatre Adventures, which includes some of the best live theatre from around the world, videotaped and introduced by professor McNamer and 13 year old Preston Blakeley.
The stage production of Playing from the Heart is performed by Polka Theatre for Children in Wimbledon, England. Based on the true story of the childhood of world-renowned solo percussionist Evelyn Glennie, Playing from the Heart shows how dreams can come true, especially if you are determined and resilient.
Growing up on her family's farm near Aberdeen, Scotland, with her loving parents and playful brothers, 8-year-old Evelyn Glennie has an idyllic life, but things change when she begins to lose her hearing. Evelyn wishes she could become a musician, but because of her disability she is discouraged from chasing the seemingly impossible dream. Due to Evelyn's strong will, her love of music, and the support of her family and a dedicated teacher, she overcomes the incredible odds. She proves that being deaf doesn't preclude you from being a musician -- and a great one at that.
The stage production of Playing from the Heart was one of three nominees for best play in the United Kingdom for young people by the prestigious Barclay Theatre Awards.
The video also won American Library Association/Booklist's Best videos of 1999, Editors' Choice.
Other plays in Globalstage's video series include The Three Musketeers, The Island of Dr. Moreau, Frankenstein, Pinocchio, Cyrano and Far from the Madding Crowd.
